Homework for Linda’s Classes

IGCSE Science

Regular homework: Weekly questions from the textbook. Revise for end of topic tests by reading through  relevant chapters and making notes on important points (including learning formulae).

Year 11 students taking IGCSE in May/June

The Co-ordinated Science syllabus (Double award) (Cambridge syllabus number 0654) covers a large amount of material. Students should attempt to learn material in small quantities regularly over the two years of the IGCSE course.

Examples:

1. Re-reading chapters from last year, concentrating on learning highlighted scientific words, diagrams, formulae and end of chapter summaries.

2. Completing past exam papers for practice (I will be distributing these in class, if further copies are required please ask). Some older papers are available from the Cambridge website.

3. Using computer websites (some specialise in revision), to go over topics. Pay particular attention to areas you feel unsure about. Useful websites:

http://www.cie.org.uk   (for the syllabus, past exam papers, students and parents websites)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/science/  (interactive activities and quizzes)

http://lgfl.skoool.co.uk/index.aspx (revision notes)

Tip: The Cambridge IGCSE Co-ordinated Science syllabus is very similar to  UK  GCSE Science courses so sites designed for these can be used for revision. When searching UK sites look for ‘GCSE’ and ‘Key stage 4′ (or ‘KS4′) to find materials at the right level.

4. Work with a friend. Choose a topic and make up quizzes/tests for each other.

5. Revision workbooks could be purchased from the UK (or other countries) if desired.  A search for GCSE revision guides on www.amazon.co.uk  shows there are many available. A general one for GCSE Science would be preferable to one designed for a particular exam syllabus (these have letters such as AQA /OCR/Twenty First Century etc.  in the title). Alternatively choose science books like the ‘Horrible Science’ series which are designed to be a good read.

6. Start work early, there is a lot to cover! Make it fun to begin with and build up the work level gradually over the next year. Good luck.

CLSP 1 and  2 Science

Regular homework: Weekly questions from the textbook. Revise for end of chapter tests by reading through the chapter and noting important points.

Extension work and revision for exams: Use the websites listed for IGCSE above but use topics listed as Key Stage 3 or KS3 in the UK system.

 CIPP 1  Science

CIPP1 will not be receiving homework in Science. They are welcome, however, to bring in any ‘Science items’ of interest to show to the class during their Monday lesson (period 5and 6). Examples so far: Omar has brought in food pyramids and Helena has brought in her cats discarded claws!
